Genre Research: Drama
The genre I will be doing is drama. Specifically, of the coming of age genre. I decided to do my final task on the drama genre because it is compatible with the storyline I am pursuing. My concept for this film is to talk about the societal expectations a teen suffers from. Nowadays, teens are told to follow a certain path then they will succeed. That is not what it is a lot of times and is definitely easier said than done. This film will focus on the struggles of a teen girl as she fights for her shot at a scholarship. As the director, I plan to capture the stress that builds in the characters.
I think this is such an important topic to touch on. Society kind of turns a blind eye on mental illness. They either see it as dysfunctional or weak, especially when it comes to teens. They partially accept it since they feel we are hormonal, random, immature beings who do not know anything about the real world. They think we are dramatic and unkempt, that being a teen is easy. But they could not be more wrong. Being a teen carries the immediate stress of becoming an adult. Then there is dealing with maintaining grades because it is built into your being that education is the only way to be successful. So we prey on that. We absorb education with our entire being until it drives us up a wall and makes us crack under the pressure of it all. Everyone holds this desire for acceptance. Mental health is so important when wanting to accomplish something, even when simply living. Otherwise, everyone would become a vegetable.
That is what this film will be about: Struggle.
