Genre Research: Drama
Genre Project (Completed).pptx
As an introduction to AICE Media Studies, I was told to do a PowerPoint on genres of film. We were given the freedom to choose which genre out of the five. Thriller, drama, comedy, action, and horror. I chose drama. I researched the ins and out of genre. From the ideal angles used, like close-ups and double shots to camera movements, like slow pans or dolly shots. I first found music to go along with the genre to play over the PowerPoint the entire time. Then during my research, I learned about lighting, elements, sound & interpretation, and last but not least, my own likes and dislikes on the drama genre. As I read sources and watched a few videos, I saw how fascinating what many think is basic or easy in film is. The intricacy of lighting in drama is so difficult. Some days it might work out, sometimes not. There are times when directors have to rely on the weather for that good lighting. I found that this had to do with Mise-en-scene. It creates an understanding of the character, the setting, and full mood by just the display alone. Within that display is lighting. The sound and interpretation aspect was also very interesting to research since I did not know how much actually went into it at first. I read about common sounds, shard or sudden, used in films that are drama-thriller. They are effective and really help the scene unravel to what the director wants the viewer to take from the film.
